Where to Go Arkansas River – Pueblo

The flows on the tailwater have been stable for a few days now. Current flows are at 252 cfs. and are prime for the tailwater. First off, keep a close eye on the flows here. They can rise or fall without warning at any time. Its anybodys guess as to what the flows are going to be on any given day. The best advice is to look at the flows coming into the reservoir. The outflows should match up pretty good with those. Fishing wise, things have been pretty good here. as long as the flows are stable. There is quite a bit of moss floating in the water. The fishing has been best before noon. Keep an eye on the water temps, they are getting warm each day.

Hatches:

Midges, Trico's, caddis, and PMDs are the main bugs right now. We have seen fish eating all of these hatches mostly subsurface. The dry fly fishing has increased significantly with the lower flows. Keep your eyes open!

Tactics:

During stable flows, the sightfishing has been fun. Fish have returned to their normal lies with the lower flows. Nymphing will always be the most effective, but we have seen some fantastic dry fly fishing here on some days. Streamer fishing has been okay throughout the day as well. Dont be afraid to add some leech, cranefly larva, scuds, leeches, or worm patterns to your rig.

Weather:

Short Term- We will have more of the same this week. Highs will be in the 90's with almost zero chances for precipitation. The wind looks great most of the week as well. The exception to that will be on Thursday, where we could see some strong winds around noon. Morning lows are still very nice and in the 50's. Its still feeling like mid summer down here. Get out and enjoy this great late summer weather!

Long Term- After this coming weekend, we may see things cool down a little, but its still going to be hot. Temps will remain in the 80's and we will see some very warm conditions. Long range forecasts are hinting at some incoming changes toward the back half of September, but as always we will have to wait and see how that develops.

Tips:

The river has been busier with these lower flows. Remember that the entire river fishes well. The annual tarantula migration is upon us. While these large spiders are pretty much harmless, seeing a ton of them all together can be a little unnerving.

PARKING NOTE- If you do fish in here, we recommend you don't leave anything in your car. Only take what you will have on your person. Thieves have been breaking into cars all over the place.

This is an area we offer guided walk/wade and float trips, please give us a call if you are interested!
